Steps to Kidney Transplant Recovery

Kidney transplant recovery extends far beyond the days that patients spend recovering at Tampa General Hospital. The risk for organ rejection is highest in the first few months after transplant surgery, so after being discharged from the hospital, patients are required to attend follow-up examinations and labs. These appointments are conducted at Tampa General Medical Group’s Transplant and Specialty Services location on the fourth floor of the building at 409 Bayshore Blvd.

Because follow-up visits are so frequent immediately after transplant surgery - kidney transplant recovery patients are asked to remain in the Tampa area for six weeks. In cases where the patient lives more than an hour away from Tampa General, our social workers can help them make living arrangements nearby. Tampa General’s Transplant House could be an option for some patients.

During the first six weeks of recovery, kidney transplant patients will require help from family members and/or friends while attending their appointments. Patients will need a care partner to drive them to and from their examinations, and to accompany them at every clinic visit.

To ensure that the transplanted kidney is functioning properly, patients will undergo testing during each appointment. They will also be required to present updated lists of medications and vital sign recordings at every visit. Every kidney transplant recipient will have a recovery follow-up schedule tailored to his or her individual needs, but a typical examination schedule could look like this:

  • Visits twice per week for the first three months
  • Visits once per week for months four to six
  • Visits twice per month for months seven to nine
  • Visits once per month for months 10 to 12
  • Visits once per year for the rest of the patient’s life

Throughout their recovery, kidney transplant recipients should also continue to visit their general physician and nephrologist on a regular basis.
