Lung Transplants at Tampa General Hospital – A High-Volume Transplant Center
Hundreds of adult lung transplants have been completed at Tampa General Hospital since the development of our lung transplant program. As a high-volume transplant center, we have substantial experience performing transplants for patients with a wide range of pulmonary conditions – even patients whose conditions may be so challenging to treat that they do not meet criteria to receive a transplant at other centers. Even though we accept high-risk patients into our transplant program, we are able to consistently produce outcomes that are better than or comparable to national averages.
Several factors contribute to the success of our lung transplant program:
- We typically perform nearly double the number of annual lung transplants in comparison to the majority of other Florida-based centers. According to reports from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR), Tampa General has historically performed more transplants during the same span of time other transplant centers in the state. To learn more about lung transplant survival rate data at TGH and surrounding areas, reference the data provided by SRTR.
- We have a transplant team that collaborates with other solid organ programs within our lung transplant center. This allows the surgeons who perform our lung transplants to observe and implement the best techniques for successful surgical procedures.
- We work with LifeLink Foundation Inc., a nationally recognized organ procurement organization. This partnership is instrumental in helping to successfully locate suitable organs for a high percentage of the patients on our lung transplant waiting list, while helping us maintain a shorter-than-expected average time to transplant.
Both single and double lung transplants are performed at Tampa General Hospital.
