Treatment for Neurological Disorders
Treatment for neurological disorders varies widely because there are so many conditions that can affect the brain, the spine, and the rest of the nervous system. At Tampa General Hospital, we offer a range of treatments, providing patients of all ages with a full spectrum of neurological care. We have been designated as a level I trauma center, meaning that our facilities have the resources needed to treat children and adults with critical conditions – such as traumatic brain injuries or strokes – on a 24/7 basis. Plus, we have a 32-bed neuro intensive care unit, making it one of the largest of its kind on Florida’s West Coast. These resources allow us to provide quick diagnosis of emergency issues using state-of-the-art imaging capabilities, and to perform critical surgery when indicated to help mitigate brain damage and other potential side effects.
Not all kinds of neurological disorders require emergency intervention, however, including:
- Movement disorders – Tics, muscle spasms, and other involuntary movements can be caused by Parkinson’s disease, injuries to the spine, stroke, and other conditions. In some cases, movement disorders can be managed through medications and muscle exercises. Tampa General also offers deep-brain stimulation treatment as necessary.
- Sleep disorders – Sleep apnea, snoring, narcolepsy, insomnia, and other sleep disorders can be evaluated using a polysomnogram to examine the patient’s sleep habits. At Tampa General, we can provide a number of treatment options for sleep-disordered breathing, including the use of a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine and even implanting a “sleep pacemaker” as appropriate.
- Spine disorders – Tampa General’s spine surgeries can often improve symptoms affecting people with herniated discs, spinal narrowing, and other spine conditions. We can also provide rehabilitative care for people who are recovering from spinal cord injuries.
- Epilepsy – With the first epilepsy program in the nation to receive disease-specific certification from The Joint Commission, Tampa General can provide 24/7 EEG monitoring, as well as surgical interventions like minimally invasive laser ablation and the implanting of a vagus nerve stimulation device (also known as a brain pacemaker).
With our wide range of emergency and non-emergency treatment for neurological disorders, Tampa General is ready to provide care for all conditions affecting the nervous system. Additionally,
we are one of the Top 10 Hospitals in Florida and ranked among the Top 10% in the U.S. for Neurology and Neurosurgery by U.S. News & World Report for 2020-2021.
