Hip Surgery at Tampa General Hospital

If you have been diagnosed with a hip condition that has not improved, you may be wondering if hip replacement surgery would be the right option for you. At Tampa General Hospital, we can help bring you some clarity by giving you all the information you need to understand your treatment options.

Generally, hip surgery would only be considered after other, more conservative treatment options, such as physical therapy, have failed to alleviate the painful symptoms caused by your hip condition. However, surgical procedures can significantly improve your quality of life by providing you with increased mobility and reduced pain and inflammation. Though most commonly performed on elderly individuals to alleviate the symptoms of a degenerative condition, such as osteoarthrosis, hip surgery may also be necessary to repair traumatic damage to the hip incurred in an accident.

Hip Surgery Candidates & Procedures

Factors such as the extent of your joint damage, age, and overall health will determine whether you’re a candidate for hip surgery, as well as the type of replacement procedure you could undergo.

At Tampa General Hospital, we offer:

  • Minimally invasive hip replacement – Our minimally invasive procedures use muscle-sparing techniques to replace the hip joint through one or two small incisions, which disturbs less tissue and allows for a streamlined recovery process.
  • Total hip replacement – The MAKOplasty® Total Hip Arthroplasty replacement procedure involves a computed tomography (CT) scan before surgery, allowing surgeons to design a specific and detailed plan for bone preparation and implant placement. The MAKO® surgical approach allows for a more precise placement and alignment of the implant.

TGH can accommodate patients who require hip surgery for an elective joint replacement procedure and those who have suffered an injury. We offer treatment in:

  • TGH’s Joint Center – This 30-bed unit is dedicated to patients requiring joint replacement surgery and provides comprehensive post-surgical services, including physical and occupational therapy.
  • TGH’s Orthopedic Trauma Care Center – This is a 34-bed unit where patients can receive surgical treatment for a wide variety of traumatic orthopedic conditions, including hip and pelvic acetabulum injuries.
