Learn About Shoulder Replacement Surgery

US News America's Best Hospitals Orthopedics AwardIf you have chronic, severe shoulder pain and/or dysfunction that has not been relieved through non-surgical means such as physical therapy, shoulder replacement surgery may be a suitable treatment option.

Shoulder replacement surgery involves a surgeon replacing damaged or worn sections of the shoulder joint with artificial parts known as prostheses, which help to reduce shoulder discomfort and restore function. Depending on the extent of the joint damage, a surgeon may need to replace only the ball of your shoulder (the top of the humerus bone) or both the ball and socket (glenoid cavity). Variations of this procedure include reverse shoulder replacement and revision shoulder replacement.

Conditions that May Warrant Shoulder Replacement Surgery

There are several health conditions that may warrant a shoulder replacement procedure. Common conditions include:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis – Also known as RA, this is a disease characterized by the inflammation and thickening of the synovial membrane that cushions the body’s joints, which causes stiffness and cartilage loss.

  • Osteoarthritis – Osteoarthritis is an age-related arthritis marked by thinning of the cartilage around the joints, which often results in painful bone-on-bone contact.

  • Severe shoulder trauma – Severe shoulder trauma is a term used to describe one or more severe fractures of the humerus bone.

  • Osteonecrosis – Osteonecrosis is a condition caused by reduced blood flow to joint bones, prompting painful bone deterioration.
