Our transplant surgery and transplant hepatology fellowships allow our physicians to share their knowledge and train the next generation of healthcare professionals, and all our physicians have clinical faculty positions at the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine.
Liver Disease Research Program
The Liver Transplant team at TGH is actively involved in clinical and drug trials to advance the treatment of liver diseases. Our physicians are currently involved in several investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored clinical trials.
- Drug trials to help ameliorate the progression of Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH)
- Clinical trials investigating non-invasive liver fibrosis tools • Clinical trials evaluating therapies for liver cancer and hepatitis C
- OCS™ trial with a liver preservation unit designed to allow for longer cold ischemic times and use of expanded criteria donors
Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) Program
The AUD Program incorporates a collaborative team of hepatologists, clinical psychologists, social workers and a mental health coordinator that provide additional support services for patients. The weekly AUD clinic incorporates community resources like Alcoholics Anonymous, intensive outpatient programs, inpatient programs and more to ensure patients remain on track with their therapy plan. As patients are working toward a successful transplant, the AUD Program focuses on supporting them through alcoholism and treatment related to this disorder.
Our multidisciplinary team of surgeons, hepatologists, interventional radiologists, and oncology specialists provides individualized treatment plans for even the most complex of cases. Our program provides comprehensive care from medical management and radiological services to surgical services and transplantation, all in one location, offering patients a streamlined and convenient experience.
Hepatitis C Donor Transplant Program
By utilizing hepatitis C donors, we have access to a larger donor pool with typically younger donors, allowing our patients to benefit from shorter wait times with the same positive outcomes seen with non-hepatitis C organs. In this program, patients are treated in a dedicated clinic for HCV and our team works in collaboration with advanced practice providers, coordinators and a specialized pharmacy team.
Organ Care System (OCS)™
TGH is actively involved in clinical trials and research to advance liver transplant care, including the recent Organ Care System (OCS)™ Liver trial to help preserve grafts during procurement. At any given time, there are over 400 clinical trials being run by TGH’s Clinical Research team and we’re always actively recruiting patients to participate. As the region’s first and largest teaching hospital, Tampa General partners with the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine to pioneer breakthrough treatments and work in multidisciplinary teams with a variety of specialists to provide world-class care to all patients.
